Deputy Sheriff Frank Hayden died from injuries he received when a man he was attempting to serve foreclosure papers on attacked him with an axe. Deputy Hayden managed to shoot the suspect in the leg as a companion tried to subdue him. The suspect escaped but was later apprehended at his home.
The suspect was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life in prison September 23, 1908.
Deputy Hayden was survived by his wife and four children. He was also the tax collector and town constable of Ludlow.
